In the Buddhist faith, the Four Heavenly Kings are four guardian gods, each of whom watches over one cardinal direction of the world.
Virupaksa ("He who sees all") has a serpent as a symbol and guards the west.
Vaisravana ("He who hears everything") is usually represented with an umbrella or a moongose and guards the north. (Korea, 2006)
