In the Buddhist faith, the Four Heavenly Kings are four guardian gods, each of whom watches over one cardinal direction of the world.
Dhrtarastra ("He who maintains the state" or "Watcher of the Lands") has a pipa and guards the east.
Virudhaka ("He who enlarges" or "Patron of Growth") has always a sword and guards the south. (Korea, 2006)
